This class addresses thedevelopments of international law in Korea from human rightsconcerns to law of the sea issues; from maritime delimitation andaccess to ocean resources to other non-security matters. Itattempts to demonstrate to students the increasingly important roleof international law in Northeast Asia. Korea, in particular, canno longer ignore the age-old global question: should states obeyinternational law, and if so, why? For the Republic of Korea, theanswer to this question is of utmost importance given itsprecarious position between two world powers, China and Japan, andits volatile neighbor to the north, the Democratic People’sRepublic of Korea. The purpose of this class is to help students ofinternational law, particularly those in Korea, to understand andappreciate the significance of international law to theinternational relations of Korea.
